This whodunnit didn't leave me asking whodunnit? as in the crime. it was 'whodunnit'? as in who made this game. As soon as I read it was American Laser Games, I pledged never ever to try another one of their games.
I'll admit, when I first got it, I was impressed with the full motion video. After a while though, it really grated on my nerves. If you made it to a part and didn't shoot the right person at the right time, it would immediately jerk to a halt, and some undertaker would come on and say some condoling words.
As well, the full motion video itself seemed to be a bunch of odds and ends spliced together haphazardly by the producers. You go through the game, and visit the various places in search of the one who shot Johnny Rock, and then as a grand finale to the game, it randomly puts you through every single video sequence they have in the game. The story just wasn't structured at all, I found myself in the exact same situation numerous times, with the bad guys all looking the same.
It really takes a lot to make a full-motion video game work, and Who Shot Johnny Rock is a prime example of why you shouldn't waste a ton of space on it. I've since seen this game for $4.99 in bargain bins, and now I see why.
Words of Wisdom: save your $4.99.
Football games on today. Graphics: Although grainy and repetative, it was full motion video. which always looks neat.
Sound: A potpourri of weird sounds await you at the end of the game. There was real voices however.
Enjoyment: I played this game until the end to see if it got any better. It didn't.
Another live-actor arcade shooter by American Laser Games (makers of Mad Dog McCree and Crime Patrol), Who Shot Johnny Rock is set in the classic 1920's style gangster era. As the title suggests, you're supposed to find out who shot singer Johnny Rock (or at least who hired the guys who shot him) and put them behind bars.
There are some differences between this game and previous American Laser Games shooters. Instead of a wimpy pistol, you get a tommy gun (which doesn't need to be reloaded). Unfortunately, you also have limited ammo and need to buy more at times. Instead of lives you have a fixed supply of money, and each time you die you lose some cash. Lose it all and it's game over.
